What Stage is Your Marriage in?

Marriages don’t fall apart overnight. They decline through five predictable stages — and the stage you’re in determines what can still be done. Ten questions. Three minutes. The clarity you’ve been missing.

What you get:

  • Your stage, scored from your answers.
  • An email explaining what your stage means, and what it predicts.
  • The single most important thing to do, or stop doing, in your stage.

I’m Dr. Becky Whetstone, Ph.D. — a marriage and family therapist known as America’s Marriage Crisis Manager®, and author of I (Think) I Want Out: What to Do When One of You Wants to End Your Marriage. I built this quiz around the same five-stage framework I use with the couples I work with every day. The results of the quiz may likely show you that you have little time to waste when it comes to working on your marriage – or it may show you that you are in, or about to be in, a full-blown marriage crisis. Whatever it is, this knowledge is your first step in understanding what is going on.

Most people have no idea what stage they are in. The earlier a couple speaks of how they are struggling and seeks professional help, the easier it will be to repair. Once a marriaeg enters the first stage, it is inevitable that it will continue to move through the stages until the final stage, unless stopped.

  • Disillusionment. Uh – I think I’m unhappy.
  • Erosion. My unhappiness is serious and not going away. It could lead to divorce. I do not want to divorce.
  • Detachment. Spouse begins to cope with unhappiness through time away from their spouse. They may go back to school, start new hobbies, have an affair, join groups or organizations.
  • The Straw. One unpredictable day, the spouse you are unhappy with does something that gives you clarity that you cannot be with someone who did whatever that thing was. It could be big or small.
  • Death of the Marriage. The spouse thinking of divorce bottoms out and emotionally disconnects. It is actually the death of Marriage Part One. They will most likely soon announce they are considering ending the marriage, but no matter what happens, they will never return to the way things were. Things are dire, and the marriage is in grave danger of ending.
